The primary function of the Veterinary Assistant is to be responsible for treatments of stable hospitalized patients and stable outpatient diagnostics and treatments. This opportunity requires the ability to work well as part of a team, and includes substantial cleaning as well as animal care taking duties.
Previous experience is preferred, but not required. We will train!
Essential Responsibilities & Tasks
Compassionately, calmly and gently approaches and handles patients.
Uses practice management software to maintain client and patient records according to hospital protocol.
Maintains solid grasp of common veterinary medical terms and abbreviations and is able to converse with other veterinary professionals in medical terms.
Implement appropriate animal husbandry skills to decrease disease spread, injury and stress to patients.
Understands and provides safe restraint for cooperative canine and feline patients during examination or procedures, including radiology, ultrasound and anesthetic induction.
Performs and recognizes normal physical exam parameters of temperature, heart rate, pulse quality, respiration and mucous membranes.
Prepares appropriate patient meals and thoroughly documents consumption.
Documents patient attitude, recognizes abnormal behavior and changes in condition and notifies appropriate associate of changes.
Accurately identifies and reports quality and quantity of vomiting, regurgitation, urine and fecal output.
Performs all in-house laboratory diagnostics.
Appropriately submits out-house laboratory samples to all diagnostic labs used.
If legally permitted by state laws, performs phlebotomy.
Able to set up intravenous fluids.
Can operate all brands of intravenous fluid pumps and can troubleshoot errors.
Able to disconnect and connect patient from intravenous fluids aseptically
Prepares supplies for IVC placement, blood draw and urinary catheter placement.
Prepares supplies for procedures to be performed by technician or veterinarian.
Assist across services during primary service downtime or as directed by supervisor.
Maintains continuing education and licensure according to state and hospital guidelines.
Processes deceased patients for both mass and private cremation. Accurately and promptly completes associated paperwork and prepares sympathy cards.
Transports non-critical patients for client visitation or discharge.
Additional job duties as assigned.
Experience working in a veterinary practice preferred.

Formerly known as Specialty & Emergency Veterinary Care in Tacoma, the hospital has been the leading 24/7 emergency and specialty center in the South Puget Sound region since 1999.
