Role Summary The Attorney I Commercial Law works as part of the in-house legal team in a shared services environment, employed by Alaska Airlines, Inc. and providing legal services for Alaska Airlines, Inc., Virgin America Inc., Horizon Air Industries, Inc., and Alaska Air Group, Inc.

Scope & Complexity This individual contributor position supports multiple business units, primarily Airport Operations & Customer Service, Maintenance & Engineering, Flight Operations, and Supply Chain Management, with a variety of transactional and counseling work, both independently or, in some instances, in collaboration with or support of other in-house attorneys and/or outside counsel as appropriate.

Key Duties

  • Negotiates, drafts, and reviews contracts and request for proposals (RFPs) in relation to, but not limited to:

  • Procurement of goods and services such as aircraft and/or engine parts and vendor services.

  • Airport operations vendor services.

  • Flight crew training, flight simulator use, and hotel rentals.

  • Flight testing arrangements and technical product support.

  • U.S. Government contracts

  • Coordinates with internal and/or external experts on matters involving insurance and risk management.

  • Identifies issues regarding data protection and technology licensing.

  • Assists senior attorneys in reviewing real estate leasing, design, and construction contracts.

  • Coordinates on and ensures compliance with contract management needs and processes.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills Required

  • Juris Doctor degree from leading school, with record of personal academic achievement.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts in a law firm, corporate, or other entrepreneurial environment.

  • Experience drafting and negotiating contracts for goods and services.

  • Ability to work independently, manage time, and multi-task. Ability to execute on multiple projects, priorities, formalities and deadlines in fast-paced, highly detailed environment where flexibility is key.

  • Possess a drive for results balanced with a practical approach and ability to maintain composure under pressure.

  • Exercise good judgment and practicality.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse and large internal customer base, as well as collaborate with colleagues as needed regarding issues outside of primary practice area.

  • Demonstrate high standards for professional integrity.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.


  • Experience as a lawyer in a law firm and/or in-house setting.

  • Experience working with clients in highly regulated, technical or mechanical industries.

  • Experience reviewing and negotiating contracts with the U.S. Government.

  • Experience or demonstrated interest in the commercial aviation or aerospace industries

  • Preference will be given to candidates who are local to the Seattle metropolitan area or who have demonstrated geographic ties to the region.
